UNIX lecture notes and additional materials

 The New Frontiers

You can find below the lecture slides and additional materials for each individual lecture.

The UNIX Internals by Uresh Vahalia (see to the right) is a good introductory book for all lectures. It covers the basic aspects of the traditional UNIX operating system.

UNIX virtual machines - Try this at home

It is strongly recommended for all students enrolled to the operating systems course to reproduce the demonstrations seen during the lectures using a UNIX/Linux virtual machine at home. Small optional home works will be available to further strengthen the basic skills using this operating system.

Many UNIX distributions can be downloaded from here as Vmware virtual machines. You can download and use the free Vmware Player to run these machines. During the lectures we use the CentOS (Redhat) Linux distribution
